New herc shirts!

herc shirts are printed on American Apparel T-shirts in the colors black, heather blue, and heather grey (the AA Track Shirt), more colors available upon request.

To purchase a herc shirt:

Send an e-mail to Fix Memphis via the profile link to the right with your size, the shirt you want (herc logo or herc wheel), color, and your address. You will then be sent a Paypal request. T-shirts are $25 and $1 of that goes to benefit Revolutions Community Bike Shop in Memphis, TN.

Please allow some time for delivery.

We're almost there!

After the last Flat Track Attack, our total amount of monies raised for the Revolutions Bike Rack Fund is $341.00! We're just $159 short of our $500 goal! So it turns out we're actually about $659 away from our $1000 goal. We're going to be pumping up the donation drive like a flat tire.

In other news, we're lining up sponsors for the 3rd annual Memphis Downs. If you're interested in donating your time or craft just send an e-mail to Anthony, J. Gorman, or myself via the profile links to the right.

ride safe, y'all

Bicycle Commuting on the Rise Nation Wide

In case you missed it, CBS news did a neat story on the increase in bicycle commuting, focusing specifically on Portland, Oregon.

Bicycles in the Paper. Like Everyday.

Bicycling is becoming an everyday news event in Memphis, Tennessee. The Commercial Appeal has devoted print time to bicycles as much as the upcoming presidential election, though we all know bike news is way more fun than presidential news.

Yesterday, a very popular article about cycling made it onto the front page of the CA just below the fold. The main point to gleam from the comments is that those that do not bike in Memphis find Memphis a terrible place to bicycle. Those who do ride find it's not half bad, and with some basic changes, could be pretty great.

I think Memphis could be a cycling paradise in a few short years. Stay tuned for how to help!

Everybody's Biking

For The Weekend!

This Friday at 5:30pm is Critical Mass. The ride will meet at the Poplar/Tucker entrance to Overton Park and ride from there. Not sure where. I won't be at the start but I'll call and find out where you are if I can.

Saturday the Attack continues! At what has affectionately been termed a "Ghettodrome" we will continue having our track races. In the past we've done Miss-And-Out's, Team Pursuits, Snowballs, Points Races, and Sprints. I think I might like to try this one:

Devil’s Scratch
A combination of a Miss and Out and a Scratch race. The race starts as a Devil takes the Hindmost (Miss and Out) eliminating half of the field, the remaining field get a neutral lap and then start a 3 lap Scratch race to contest the winner.

You can view a list of different types of track races here. Post a comment about which one you'd like to try.

Finally, Britney McIntosh has uploaded her pictures from the Space Race to the Fix Memphis flickr. You can really tell the difference a good camera makes. Thanks for the photos, Britney!

Roger's Going Away

Party! From Roger:

The party is tonight, Monday, at my parent's house: 676 Center Dr. - the last side street off of N. Parkway before it turns into Summer. Take a left onto Center and the house will be on your right side, down about 10 houses. We'll have the grill going if you want to bring something to throw on it, as well as something to drink for yourselves. Definitely bring Emily as well - things are starting around 7, so come on by whenever y'all can. See you then. Oh and my cell number is 901-338-6968 if you have any questions.

Unfortunately I have to wake up at the break so I won't be able to go, but I hope everyone has fun!

Publicity

Here is the Commercial Appeal article from Saturday where we were quoted about the proposed bicycle lanes. Please read it and share your thoughts in the comments section either here or there.

Also, thanks to everyone who came out to the track race last night. It was a blast and Josh Gorman swept the podium. Was it because Dennis didn't race? Was Chase tired from riding The Toxic that morning? Will some unknown challenger show up and devistate? Find out in two weeks! East High School Track, 7pm, every other Saturday.

One Million Bicycle Related Events in Memphis this Week

There are a million bicycling related events happening this week.

First, tonight there will be a volunteer night at Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop. If you want to work off volunteer hours, you have a chance to knock out two hours tonight. We start at 7 and go till 9 p.m. Hope to see you there! www.revolutionsmemphis.com

Second, tomorrow night at 6 p.m. the Cooper Young Community Association will host its monthly meeting on the deck outside of Revolutions here at First Congregational. The topic will be "Making Cooper Young Memphis' First Bike Friendly Neighborhood." They will have sno-cones. What more do you need? Attendance at this event will count towards volunteer hours.

Third, if you can make it out to the Sustainable Shelby Agenda Public Presentation, it will be held at the Memphis Botanic Gardens on Tuesday July 8 at 2:30 p.m. They will announce that creating bicycle paths and installing "Share the Road" with bicyclists signs is in the top ten priorities for the county. Here is the official info from the County on the event:

"You are invited to join Mayor A C Wharton in launching the Sustainable Shelby Agenda, our community's first comprehensive agenda that is equal parts sustainability, smart growth, green building, and more. This agenda was produced from committees and public polling that converged to create detailed recommendations for a sustainable future. This Sustainable Shelby Call to Action meeting will announce the agenda for the future and next steps to accomplish them. Special remarks will be made by Doug Farr, author of Sustainable Urbanism, the seminal book that set the context for our local agenda. Please invite your friends and colleagues to be part of this history-making meeting."

SUSTAINABLE SHELBY
CALL TO ACTION
Tuesday, July 8
2:30 - 4:00 p.m.
Memphis Botanic Garden
750 Cherry Road
Memphis, Tennessee 38117

Fourth, the shop will be closed on Thursday during our normal hours (6:30-8:30 p.m.) in lieu of a meeting held by the City of Memphis to discuss creating bike lanes on Shady Grove Road and Humphreys near Shelby Farms. Revolutions has organized a ride from First Congregational to Christian Brothers High School where the meeting will be held. The ride will leave from Revolutions at 5:15 p.m. in order to make it to the meeting by the start time of 6:30 p.m.. Please join us, or head over to CBHS at 6:30 p.m. Attendance and riding time count towards earning volunteer hours at Revolutions. Don't forget a blinky light and a helmet if you'd like to ride with us.

Finally, the Revolutions workshop topic this Saturday is "A Bicycle Maintenance Crash Course." Participants will learn bike basics: the regular maintenance required for all bicycles, a simple explanation of how a bike should fit, and concise explanations of common repairs—like how to change a flat tire! All workshops start at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, but this workshop will start at 1 p.m. Please make a note of it--Again, all workshops start at 10 a.m., but this workshop will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. this Saturday July 12. Remember, all workshops count towards volunteer hours.

Keep those wheels turning, and the water bottles flowing!

Cyclist Hit By Car

Danny Fadgen was hit by a car as he and his wife crossed the Wolf River Bridge. He broke his back and is at home recovering. We're thankful that he's still alive but this really puts the issue of bike lanes at the forefront. As posted earlier the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host a meeting at CBHS (right down the street from the accident) to discuss bike lanes on Shady Grove and Humphreys. The meeting is at 6:30pm this THURSDAY!

Read about the accident: Commerical Appeal, WMC TV

Want bike lanes? E-mail, call, or write your city council representative.

Also, in the events list you will see that July 25th is the last Friday of the month and therefore Critical Mass. I've already seen the following two flyers from separate sources so let's really make this one huge!

Flat Track Attack

Due to the success of past attacks we are now going to have track races every other Saturday, the next one being July 12th. East High School Track, 7pm. Brakes optional.

No Brakes

No Brakes is a boutique in Atlanta that caters to fixed wheel bikes. They're having their one year anniversary this Sunday and celebrating with a race. Visit their website for more info.

Memphis City Cycling Code

Hey everyone, after the break, in the comments, is the text of the City's vehicle code as it applies to cyclists. As Cort mentioned, some are in serious need of update (no coasting in the park, y'all), but they are generally a good start for cycling safety in the city.

Copy and paste it into word - at 9pt font size and in two columns, it will fit on the front and back of one sheet of paper.

SPACE RAAAAACCEE!!!

If you don't know, the Sputnik is the revolving neon sign at Joe's Liquor (corner of Poplar and Belvedere). We're also looking for more sponsors so if you want to throw something into the prize pile, let me know.

TO REGISTER: Simply post in the comments section that you will be there. We need to know how many packages to bring.

There will also be an afterparty at Chase and Josh's and you don't have to race to go to the party.
